What is Augmented Reality?

Augmented Reality or AR is the integration of digital information with the user’s environment in real time. It can and does get misinterpreted as Virtual Reality, which creates a totally artificial environment. Augmented Reality uses the users existing environment and overlays digital information on top of it.

What can AR be used for?

So far AR used for many different applications from entertainment sectors, too engineering applications. It is becoming more apparent that product companies are utilising the technology to show off their latest products. One example of this is IKEA, as they have now released an app called IKEA Place, this enables users to view furniture within their homes in real time, before even visiting the store. This has paved a way to show how useful AR can be for the marketing sector.

Changes are also being made within the engineering sector, as engineers are now able to view products within the comfort of their office before even going to the site.

Another industry that is making use of AR is the gaming industry, as was demonstrated with Mine craft on the HoloLense. This enabled the player to walk around the game as it would be placed on a chosen surface in front of them, enabling them to interact with the game in a true 3-dimensional way.
